About the Denver Gaels

abo_250The Denver Gaels was founded in 1996 and was primarily made up of Irish nationals living in the Denver metro area. The idea of a Gaelic team in Denver had been talked about over a few pints for a long time by the veterans in the area until finally the Dubliner in the group, Shay Dunne, took the initiative and called the first ever meeting at which the Denver Gaels was established. The Denver Gaels are the first Gaelic sports organization in the Rocky Mountain region.

The Irish community in Denver is relatively small so initially it was tough to field a team for competition. As a consequence a lot of young Americans have taken to the sports and to our delight have proven to be very capable Gaelic players. The club continues to grow and we are always looking for new members. So, to all current or aspiring young Irish footballers and hurlers looking to relocate to the states consider the beautiful Rocky Mountain region of Denver, Colorado. . . . . leave the rain and the bogs for long hot dry summers and a winter of skiing.

The Denver Gaels are part of the North American County Board with members from all over the Denver Metro area and along the Front Range. We currently have 4 teams playing - Mens Football, Hurling, Ladies Football and Youths Football - and we are making great progress developing a camogie team for 2008.

In 2005 in the NACB area, there were 110 adult clubs and 14 Youth clubs playing Football, Hurling or Camogie in the US outside New York City. These clubs participated in Divisional Championship competitions to qualify for the North American Finals in their respective sport and grade of competition. As of 2005, Gaelic games were being organized and played in over 30 cities across the US, and The Denver Gaels are proud of the accomplishments of all of our teams and players.
