Who are we? We are the Denver Gaels Hurling Team(s). We started playing hurling in Denver in 2004 and since then we have competed at Junior C level in North America. In 2007 we won the NACB Junior C championship (read all about it here). In 2008, we played at Junior B and also at Junior C level. The hurling club has grown from less than 15 players in 2004 to over 60 players in 2009 and the club is still growing! New members are always welcome - no experience necessary!

What do we do? Throughout the Spring, Summer and Fall, we play a hurling pub league once a week, we hold hurling practice sessions during the midweek and we travel to and host other states in interstate games and tournaments - including the NACB finals every year on Labor Day weekend.

When do we do it? In general, we play our pub leagues games every Sunday and we hold our practice sessions every Thursday and also on Tuesdays in August. See the hurling schedule for upcoming games and practices.

Where do we do it? Every Sunday we play our pub league at Dicks Sporting Goods Park. We hold our mid week practices either in Garland Park or Cook Park, Denver. See the huring schedule for exact details on where we will be for every session.

What is hurling anyway?! Hurling is an ancient Irish sport that predates written history and remains the national sport of Ireland to this day. It has elements of hockey, football and lacrosse. Below are some videos that show the game in action. The 1st shows part of 2008's All-Ireland final between Kilkenny and Waterford (before it descended into a mismatch!) and the 2nd shows part of the match between Cork and Galway - arguably the best game of the 2008 (look out for Joe Canning's goal - fantastic stuff!). The third video is a montage of the Denver Gaels' exploits in 2008 - enjoy!

What are the basic skills? Glad you asked! Here are links to online videos that demonstrate most of the major skills in the game:

Striking the ball from the hand; Solo running; Jab lift; Lift and strike; Ground strike; Hand pass; Overhead strike; Overhead catch; Overhead batting.
